The man who commanded the Apollo 13 mission to safety has launched a lakeside mansion onto the market for $3.5 million.
James Lovell, who was played by Tom Hanks in the movie “Apollo 13″ and who hosted the actor at this very home, bought this property on Lake LBJ outside Austin in 1988. He and his wife built the 4,895-square-foot home with 4 bedrooms, 6 baths and Texas-sized views across the water.
"I will always miss the boating, the cookouts and the beautiful sunsets with my family and neighbors on Lake LBJ,” Lovell said.
He and his wife, Marilyn, chose the Horseshoe Bay Resort in the heart of Texas Hill Country because of its 6,300-acre lake, multiple golf courses and a runway for personal and business aircraft — making it the perfect second home for the Lovells, who live in Chicago.
The great room’s massive fireplace is matched only by gravity-defying, multi-story windows topped with a semi-circle of stained glass images that feature Lovell, including an insignia for the Apollo 13 mission.
The listing agent is Tammie Bennett of Kuper Sotheby's International Realty.
