When location scouts went hunting for the longtime home of Maura (née Mort) Pfefferman in the breakout Amazon series “Transparent” — which won the Golden Globe for best TV series right out of the box — their assignment was layered.
The home had to have style but couldn’t be “too new and fresh and clean,” said Jordana Kronen, a location manager in Los Angeles who helped find the place. “It’s a house he’s lived in his whole life and raised kids in.”
Four homes were considered, and the mid-century home that was chosen — in Pasadena, miles away from its fictional Pacific Palisades setting — was “by far the best,” according to “Transparent” production designer Cat Smith.
“Something about the plan of that house is so beautiful, almost like a piece of art. From every angle, it’s spectacular,” she said.
Like Hollywood talent scouts, the people who find homes for shows have go-to resources — often online, using sites such as EastWest Locations and Meyler & Co.
“They rep houses that are already film friendly, so we’re not wasting time knocking on doors that don’t work,” Kronen explained.
As important as locations are, crew members spend most of their time working on sets built to look like the original sites.
The pilot for “Transparent” included a few days of shooting in Pasadena, then a set was built at Paramount Pictures for ongoing filming. The crew sometimes returns to the real location for outdoor scenes, such as those by Maura’s pool.
Mixing in outdoor scenes keeps a show looking fresh and real — and a well-chosen home can keep it from becoming visually dull.
“One of the things you keep in mind when looking at locations is, if it went to series and was shot four years in a row, is it still going to be interesting?” Smith said.
As “Transparent” enters its second season, the family house, with its modern lines and dark woods, is gliding right through that test.
“Even when you walk on set, your eyes go, ‘Oh yeah, this is like home.'”
