That wizard of big-screen criticism, Roger Ebert, has been gone for more than two years now, and his wife, Chaz, wrote this summer that she finds it easier to cope than she used to.
She’s also showing signs of moving forward, at least when it comes to the weekend home in Michigan that the couple shared throughout their 20-year marriage. She’s asking $4 million.
“It’s a beautiful place where we had a lot of special times, especially with our grandchildren,” Chaz Ebert — who’s co-written a play called “The Black White Love Play” about their love story — told Crain’s Chicago Business. “But I think it’s time for another family to have it.”
Although the views are astonishing from the 4,140-square-foot home and guesthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan, it’s the giant screen in the living room that will capture an Ebert fan’s attention.
You can almost picture Roger and Chaz sitting beneath the vaulted ceiling, projector overhead and old-time movie posters on the wall.
Built in 1934 for pro wrestler “Jumping” Joe Savoldi, the home is a few feet down the beach from Carl Sandburg’s old digs. It has 4 bedrooms, 5 baths and an expansive kitchen that opens onto a dining area with gorgeous views.
Down the steps is a guesthouse with its own kitchen and even closer views of the lake.
