While John F. Kennedy’s family had its beloved compound in Hyannis Port, MA, the president’s wife wanted something more private — and Jackie got it, in this country estate outside Washington, D.C.
The First Lady dubbed it Wexford, and she loved the place. "You have done the most fantastic job and everyone agrees that house is really a dream,” she gushed in a letter to the couple who oversaw its renovation. “One could not wish for anything more perfect - if only we could live in it all year long! And Jack loves it."
Despite her devotion to Wexford, don’t expect it to be featured in the much-anticipated and already awarded film, “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman. Sadly, the family visited the estate for just three weekends before President Kennedy was assassinated.
Wexford exudes the kind of understated charm that reaches across aisles: In 1980, Ronald and Nancy Reagan reportedly rented the estate, and he rehearsed there for debates with President Jimmy Carter.
Elegantly traditional, like the First Lady who chose it, the 4-bedroom, 5-bath home sits on 166 acres where Jackie rode a horse with little John-John in her arms and young Caroline alongside, riding her pony, Macaroni.
“It’s not a huge home, just comfortable and charming,” said Mary Ann McGowan of Thomas & Talbot Real Estate, who’s the agent for the $5.95 million listing. The property has been on the market for years, in part because the current owners use it as a second home and have been in no rush to sell.
The home offers double dressing rooms, multiple fireplaces, and built-in cabinets and bookcases. The grounds boast a tennis court, pool and horse stables outfitted with water and electricity, plus a studio above the detached garage, and an underground bomb shelter.
