“Go, and never darken my towels again.” If Groucho Marx ever actually delivered that line to a guest, it could easily have been in this Los Angeles home, where he lived in the 1940s. The 5-bedroom, 4-bath Cape Cod has been remodeled, but you can still picture him leaning on the fireplace mantle with a cigar in his mouth, speed-muttering a witty phrase.
The Marx brother famously never wanted to join any club that would have him as a member, which is just as well, because this home — now on the market for $4.549 million — is closer to The Roxy Theatre and Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip than to a country club.
Spanning 3,700 luxurious square feet, the home includes beautifully finished hardwood floors and some of the most decadent bathing arrangements in the Hollywood Hills. Two master suites boast spa showers and separate soaking tubs, and one of the tubs offers a view. That suite also features built-ins, a sun deck, and an office — great for reading a book, which is man’s best friend outside of a dog. (It’s too dark to read inside a dog.)
The gated property’s rear garden is a Southern California paradise, with a swimmer’s pool, a spa and a large, gleaming shower room that, in keeping with the bathing par excellence theme, offers a sauna and steaming.
The current owners updated the 1935 home with all new plumbing, electrical and HVAC, along with security systems. The listing agents are Brent Watson and Charlie Schuster of Compass.
