Spread Out a Summer Spread in America's Biggest Backyards

Dreaming of a bigger backyard? Yearning for more outdoor space makes sense in the summertime as temperatures soar and the desire to host the best cookout kicks into high gear. Here at Zillow, we started wondering: Where are the biggest backyards in America?

Zillow Research analyzed lot sizes of homes in 100 of the biggest cities in the country and discovered that if you want the most space, move south.

Lawrenceville, GA, the second-oldest city in the Atlanta metro, tops the list with an average lot size of an incredible 14,375 square feet. That’s like living on one-quarter of a football field. Imagine your Slip N’ Slide starting in the end zone and running all the way to the 25-yard line!

Next best place for space? If you’re serious about having that sweeping backyard of your dreams, move to North Carolina. Five of the top 10 cities in America for big backyards are in the Tar Heel State: Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Durham, Charlotte and Greensboro. Average lot size is between 12,000 and 14,000 square feet.

On the flip side, where are the smallest backyards? Homes in Baltimore, MD have an average lot size of just 1,710 square feet. You might have to skip a bocce ball tournament, but hopefully there’s room for the grill.
