“Bob Hope partied here” makes a great selling point, but it hasn’t been enough to bring in buyers for two of the entertainer’s most celebrated California homes.
His nearly 15,000-square-foot spread in Toluca Lake, CA, where stars from Frank Sinatra to Bing Crosby hung out, has been on the market almost two years, and just took a 48-percent price whack to $12 million. It’s not the first time the price has been slashed on the 8-bedroom, 8-bath estate, which first hit the market in 2013 at $27.5 million.
Walled and gated, the property includes a two-bedroom guesthouse and staff quarters. The living room features walls of glass framing a landscape of gardens, a putting green and a pool.
Hope bought the land in 1939, and began construction of the home for himself and his wife, Dolores. It was renovated in the 1950s, according to the listing by Craig Strong of the John Aaroe Group. Hope died in 2003, and Dolores passed away in 2011.
An even bigger Hope estate — the couple’s beloved Palm Springs home — also has taken a major price chop. Previously shopped around for $50 million and listed at $34 million, it’s now on the market for $24.999 million.
The largest home ever designed by architect John Lautner, the Palm Springs estate measures more than 23,000 square feet and sits on more than six acres. Its listing agents are Stewart Smith and Patrick Jordan of Windermere Real Estate.
Two other Palm Springs homes owned by the Hopes sold in 2013 for less than $1 million each.
