Home Decor Challenge: The Big Blank Wall

It’s a common home decor challenge: that massive featureless wall that just begs to be decorated. Do you go the gallery wall route? How about decals? Or one great big piece of art?

Plenty of options exist for filling a large blank space. Here are a few favorites.

The gallery wall

Gallery walls combine pictures and paintings of different sizes and colors, framed and unframed artwork, and even textiles, wall decals and murals. This choice is popular for a reason: you can fill as much space as you want.

Go neutral, bold, sophisticated, or creative with different colors, shapes, and sizes.

Wall coverings

Turn your big blank wall into a big accent wall. Select a wall covering that adds a burst of bold color or a fun pattern. Wallpaper with texture and intricate details will inject extra style into your space.

A thin vertical stripe looks stunning in a femininely styled living room. Or opt for a punchy red or bold navy printed wall covering to add sophistication.

Statement art

Another effective strategy for filling a big blank wall is installing a striking piece of statement art. Hanging one or two large, eye-catching pieces creates interest and adds beautiful visual elements to the room.

Build a bookshelf

If you're uncomfortable with that much blank space, construct a simple bookshelf to take up real estate. Create a library scene with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a cozy sitting area, and a statement light fixture to bring the look full-circle.

If you don't have enough books to fill your shelves, get creative with art work, framed photos, knickknacks, and candles.

Americans on the Move: 2015 Trends in Residential Relocation

As the year draws to a close, many people look back and analyze past milestones. One interesting area to explore is trends in moving patterns. Why did people move in 2015? Where did they relocate to? How much did Americans pay for their moves, on average?

Here’s a look at some revealing data about relocation.

Reasons to move

In November 2015, the U.S. Bureau published a detailed release with mobility related data indicating the reasons behind American moves from 2014 to 2015.

It turns out that the highest number of moves were related to housing. Most of the people who undertook relocation wanted a new home, either to secure cheaper housing, or to buy a home of their own.

The second most common cause for moving is family-related. Many respondents moved to establish their own household, or because they got married.

Relocating for work ranked third among reasons for moving. Many people moved to find work, take a new job, transfer with their current job, or reduce their commute time.

Other, less common reasons to move included attending college, or seeking climate or health-related changes.

Popular destinations

According to a moving industry survey by MyMovingReviews, in 2015, more people moved to the West and the South than other parts of the country. Three of the five busiest routes for moves ended in California. The other two routes were to Florida and Texas.

2015's Most Valuable Housing Markets

In 2015, the value of all homes across the U.S. increased $1.1 trillion, growing 4.1 percent over the past year. At year end, the entire housing stock is expected to be valued at $28.5 trillion - $10 trillion more than 2015's third quarter U.S. gross domestic product.

The most valuable market going into 2016 is the Los Angeles metro, with a total value of $2.4 trillion. California as a whole accounts for almost a quarter of the country's cumulative home value, which isn't surprising considering it's home to high-valued markets like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose.

Meanwhile, renters spent $535 billion on housing in 2015 - nearly as much as the total budget of the Department of Defense ($575 billion). That's almost $20 billion more than in 2014, due to 1.8 million new renter households and rental prices rising at record pace.

Renters in the New York/Northern New Jersey market spent the most on rent in 2015 - about $56 billion.

Taylor Swift Named Most Desirable Neighbor for 2016

Every December, we ask Americans which celebrities they would most like to have as their neighbor, and which ones they’d hate to have next door. Here’s who respondents would be happy to call neighbor in 2016, and who they would have hated to live beside in 2015.

The kitchen in Taylor Swift’s Tribeca loft offers plenty of room to gather her squad.

On top of numerous other accomplishments this year, pop sensation Taylor Swift can now add Most Desirable Celebrity Neighbor to her growing awards list.

Swift was the top choice for a neighbor in 2016, earning 12 percent of votes. The pop star was especially favored among millennials, receiving 17 percent of their votes.

"2015 was a landmark year for Taylor Swift, from her highly successful 1989 World Tour, to being named the youngest female ever on Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women list, so it's no surprise America picked the down-to-earth singer-songwriter as 2016's most desirable neighbor," says Jeremy Wacksman, Zillow chief marketing officer.

When she’s not touring or hanging out with glamorous friends around the world, Swift hangs her hat in the 7-bedroom, 5.5-bath Tribeca loft she purchased for nearly $20 million in October 2014.

Blockbuster star Jennifer Lawrence and comedian Amy Schumer rounded out the top three positions, earning 11 percent and nine percent of the votes, respectively. All three women were equally as popular among male and female voters.

Worst neighbors of 2015

Trump reportedly never lived in the NYC apartment he sold for $14M under his initial ask.

Outspoken Republican candidate Donald Trump tops this year's list for worst neighbor, moving up three positions from his fourth-place finish in 2014. One in four voters (24 percent) say Trump is the worst neighbor of 2015 - nearly five times more than last year (five percent of votes).
Trump was especially disliked by females (27 percent) and millennials (33 percent) polled.

"Donald Trump is frequently in the limelight for his polarizing comments and non-apologetic attitude, which some may see as unattractive qualities in a neighbor," says Wacksman.

In July 2015, Trump sold a nearly 6,200-square-foot apartment in the Trump Park Avenue tower for $21 million - significantly less than his original $35-million asking price.

Kim Kardashian and Kayne West came in second with 22 percent of the votes, narrowly defeating last year's worst neighbor, Justin Bieber, who ranked third this year. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton finished fourth with 11 percent of the votes.

House of the Week: The Oldest House in Washington, DC

What to do if you’re new to Washington, DC, and can’t find a colonial home suitable for your Americana collection? If you’re George Maurice Morris in the early 1940s, you pay to move a Georgian gem from New England to a prime piece of land in your new locale.

That’s how this 8,820-square-foot home came to Washington, DC’s perennially swanky Kalorama area. It’s on the market for $10.5 million.

Unable to find an old colonial in DC, the American Bar Association president heard that the family who owned “The Lindens” — a Massachusetts summer home erected by a ship builder in 1754 — had fallen on hard financial times, and he decided to buy the home and move it down the coast.

“Only right after the Depression, when labor was so inexpensive, could you have it brought to Washington from north of Boston,” said listing agent William F.X. Moody of Washington Fine Properties.

The home traveled on six railroad cars and was reassembled with only three windowpanes broken, according to co-listing agent Christopher Leary.

Most of the residence, which has been featured in Architectural Digest, is original, except for modern touches — like plumbing. All 6 bedrooms have ensuite baths that used to be wig-powdering rooms.

The first floor includes a living room with built-in seats and interior shutters, a dining room with wide-plank floors, a library and a kitchen with a butler’s pantry. The second and third floors hold the bedrooms as well as a billiard room, family room and office. The finished basement boasts a sauna, a media room and a tavern with a fireplace.

The ship builder’s touches are visible on the home’s exterior, which includes a widow walk and one side that’s shaped like an inverted ship.

Year-End Home Insurance Checklist

Soon, colorful ornaments and Christmas carols will be replaced by confetti, noisemakers and the strains of Auld Lang Syne.

As 2015 draws to a close, home maintenance can easily take a back seat during the excitement of the holidays.

Much of the country has experienced an unseasonably warm December, but January and February could unfold much differently. That means your home may be subject to cold weather damage. To prevent that, follow this home maintenance checklist to ensure your residence is prepared for the big chill ahead.

Test your alarms

You should do this several times throughout the year, but it's worth a reminder. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and fire and burglar alarms. Make sure the batteries are full of life, and that everything functions properly so you'll be alerted if disaster strikes.

If you have children, it's also a great time to revisit your emergency evacuation plan to ensure they know what to do if a fire, tornado or other devastating peril strikes too close to home.

Gutters and roof

In some parts of the country, the leaves are still falling from trees and covering lawns of residential neighborhoods. No matter if the leaves are just falling or if tree branches have been bare for months, if leaves are piled or packed in your gutters, they need to be removed sooner rather than later.

When leaves accumulate, it causes drainage problems. This means that when it rains, water won't be able to go down the spout and away from your home, which could lead to it forcing its way into your home's walls and ceilings.

While you're at it, inspect your roof. Make sure no shingles are damaged or ruined, and confirm that there aren't any leaks. Roofs must be strong and functional to withstand the weight of snow in the winter, so it's important to make necessary repairs or replacements now. Just remember that it's probably best to leave these fixes to the pros.

Inspect your foundation

The last thing you want to deal with during the winter months is ice seeping into a crack in your foundation, widening it and causing structural problems with your home.

Take a walk around your home and keep an eye out for cracks. Though small cracks are completely normal, it's best to seal them with caulk to prevent further damage.

Seal windows and doors

Letting air escape through gaps around window and doorframes could mean an exceptionally high heating or cooling bill.

While you're sealing cracks in your foundation, seal the spaces around your windows and doors, too. Keep warm air inside the house and cool air outside, and vice versa.

Maintain heating and cooling systems

Speaking of your heating and cooling bills, it's wise to inspect and maintain these systems.

Ensuring that heating and cooling systems are in good working condition and tackling repairs are more tasks you may want to leave to professionals. Just make sure your vents are clean, and that no spaces are obstructed by dirt, debris or other types of buildup.

Create a home inventory and review your policy

With a new year on the horizon, most of us make resolutions to be better versions of ourselves. Some changes such as being more responsible and more aware can apply to your home insurance.

Making a home inventory - a complete list of everything you own and the value of each item - can help better prepare you for the unknown. If a disaster such as fire strikes, destroying your home and all your belongings, you may be in too much distress to remember everything you own (and certainly not how much each item cost).

Do yourself a favor and tackle creating this type of list in the New Year, and store it in a safe place. This act could save you stress and time down the road, as it'll make the claims process significantly easier.

Understanding your policy and being aware of every facet listed will greatly benefit you. Insurance can be tricky, so go over your policy with an agent so that you’ll understand every provision in it. Reviewing your policy can alert you to the fact that you may need more coverage than last year, or that you could qualify for new discounts.
